Project overview

RestPay was born in the minds of future business partners, Tomek and Marcin, as a response to the common inconvenience people have when dining out with friends: having to split the bill among several people or waiting for a long time till the order will be taken.

It was then that they made the decision to join forces and create an app that would address this issue. This is how the first concept of the RestPay app came about.

After preparing the MVP, the newly formed team set off to conquer the world. When looking for the first customers, Tomek submitted the project to a competition organised by the EIT, thanks to which the startup gained its first funding.

Problem
  • long waiting time for the order
  • a lot of workloads for waiters
  • bill splitting problem
  • the problem of easily transferring the tip to the waiter in digital form
Solution
  • order and pay without any involvement of the waiter
  • waiter brings pre-paid and prepared dishes and focuses on serving guests
  • split the group bill
  • tip the waiter through the app
  • rate each dish on the menu individually as well as the restaurant as a whole

Challenges

The concept might look easy, yet there were a few challenges to overcome.

01
Deliver more than expected
Integration with POS systems

It is never easy to integrate with closed systems. This requires business-level talks first, then technology comes into play.

02
Take ownership and be engaged
Obtaining menus from customers and restaurants

In order to fill the app with relevant content, we had to ask restaurants to share their menus and then upload them into the application. As you may suspect, restaurant owners and managers are rather busy people.

03
Be transparent and communicative
Designing stands for tables with QR code

We needed to prepare table stands with a QR code so that customers could interact with our app while visiting the restaurant. The design had to be universal but on the other hand not brutal, to ensure every restaurant could use it.

Goals

100 restaurants in a year

We set a high goal for ourselves to obtain 100 restaurants in a year.

10,000 users a year

We wanted to expand the reach as much as possible in the beginning.

Obtaining seed investment

To grow and scale faster, we needed a seed investment.

Further development of the application and the team

This is just the beginning and we know it.

Achievements

It was not easy, but we managed. Check our achievements!

Winning the EIT competition and obtaining funding

This was a real milestone for the Restimo startup as a whole. This event opened a lot of doors for us and proved that we can deliver and turn ideas into real business.

Participation in the AWS startups program

Another milestone that helped us big time. As participants, we received extra coins to use AWS infrastructure almost for free. It also gave us bigger recognition in the startup market.
